Wristband History

Wristband MixedBe Strong Hearted | Kia Kaha wristbands were the first wristbands created. They were inspired by the words Kia Kaha, meaning “be strong in the face of challenge” or "stand strong" in the language of the Maori people of New Zealand where Hereditary Diffuse Gastric Cancer (HDGC) was first identified.

Designed to symbolize solidarity they became a source of strength.

The color teal was selected because it is reminiscent of the color of the waters that connect us, no matter where we are in the world. This color is also found throughout New Zealand, including the research lab where the CDH1 gene mutation that causes HDGC was first discovered!

Whether the challenge we face is stomach cancer, some other type of cancer, or something else happening in our lives, the Kia Kaha spirit is always with us!

No Stomach For Cancer® wristbands are NFSC’s latest wristband design to bring focus to awareness of stomach cancer. They are available in periwinkle, the color designated for stomach cancer awareness.
