This was my first year participating in the NSFC Walk. I was lucky to participate with founder, Karen Chelcun Schreiber and fellow board member, Jane MacKenzie in NYC. The day was met with beautiful weather and an enthusiastic spirit as we walked the streets of the city that never sleeps. We spread awareness, shared stories, and walked for the cause!
While my involvement in NSFC has been new to this year, I have had a long-standing relationship with stomach cancer. Twelve years ago I was a seemingly typical somewhat self-absorbed 18 year old starting college…or so I remember. It was September 11th. The rest of the day seemed a blur. You may think it was for obvious reasons but for me that day changed for a different reason. That day my mother was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer. And at that moment life changed for my family and me. Three weeks later she passed away.
Today I am an educator and psychologist who works with children, adolescents, and families. My involvement with NSFC as a board member is rather new but I hope to offer a lasting contribution by developing patient support programs targeted at young adults and families affected by stomach cancer.
