The No Stomach for Cancer walk this year was bittersweet for me. Last year my husband, Tom, walked with us, even though he was losing his battle with cancer. He lost his fight just short of one month later, on December 1st, 2012.
This year we walked without him, but the memories were everywhere. It was bittersweet, because we had a great turn out for the walk, the weather was perfect (for Minnesota in November), and we raised a lot of money; however, the walk was a difficult one for our family and me. Tom’s sister, Jean, organized the walk and placed bags with pictures of loved ones that we remember. That was a tough stop for me, seeing Tom and his smile. It’s been a hard year, and I so many times just want to talk to him one more time, or to ask him advice.
We had some new families join us this year, some new friends, and many old friends. I don’t know if I would have gotten through this year without my kids, my family, and especially my friends that always call to have coffee, go out to lunch, or to just “hang out”. To all of you, just know that you have saved me.
Kudos to all that turned out for the walk. We are doing the right thing by educating people about stomach cancer and helping families get through the struggles that this disease brings.
